When you're planning a trip and looking for a place to stay, there are more choices than ever before. But before you start choosing, you might need to decide whether you want tostay in a hotel or in a private rented house.

Private holiday rentals, from platforms like “Airbnb’ and “Vrbo”, have become moreand more popular among travelers. And we may often think they are less expensive thanhotels. But according to a study by a UK consumer advice website, hotels are very often  cheaper.

The website “Which?" compared the average price of thousands of hotels around theworld with 300,000 houses listed on “Airbnb” and “Vrbo”. It found that one-bedroom privateholiday rentals on these platforms were on average 19% more expensive than hotel roomsBut five-star hotels weren't included.

In Hong Kong, for example, “Which?" found that one-bedroom “'Airbnb” and “Vrbo’houses were 85% more expensive per night, On the popular Greek island called Santorini, theaverage price of a hotel room was $145. But the average price of a one-bedroom private holiday rental was $ 247, about 70% higher per night.

However, there are cheaper houses to be found on these platforms according to“Which?". While one-bedroom houses were often more expensive, Rory Boland from“Which?"’ said. “For larger groups that need more rooms and space, private rentals are stillikely to beat hotels on price and suit them better.”
